Twitter beef: McDonald's goes after Trump, then says it was hacked

A McDonald's representative said the company deleted the tweet, has secured the account and is investigating the matter.

The company was notified by Twitter that its account had been "compromised", McDonald's said, adding that it is now investigating the hack.

Very early this morning, the McDonald's Twitter account tweeted at Donald Trump.

The message was published on the company's corporate Twitter account at 6.16am EST on March 16 to its 151,000 followers and stayed online for around 20 minutes. It also told Trump that he has "tiny hands".

McDonald's, based in Oak Brook, Illinois, didn't comment beyond its statement on Twitter.

Security experts have warned that this should be a wakeup call for companies that aren't properly securing their social media accounts. One commenter on a TechCrunch report on yesterday's incident expressed his thoughts on the matter, theorizing that the tweet may have come from someone who thought they were using their personal Twitter, and not the company's account.

McDonald's reacted quickly and took down the tweet, but not before it was screen grabbed by Twitter users and spread across the Internet. Trump supporters, meanwhile, responded with hashtags threatening to #BoycottMcDonalds. He is unlikely to be pleased by McDonald's tweet. It says it was hacked.

Maybe Trump will get revenge by attacking McDonald's on Twitter and by doing a commercial for White Castle, he shouldn't have any problems holding a White Castle slider with his diminutive hands.

With the growing influence of Twitter and other social media sites, Hacking has become a new tool to propagate an ideology or message to masses.

McDonald's handling of the situation, in addition to initial customer reactions, probably won't affect them in the long run.

When Trump won the Republican primary on June 7, 2016, he celebrated his victory by posting a photo of himself on his private plane eating a McDonald's Big Mac and fries.
