Roger Federer advances after ill Nick Kyrgios withdraws from Indian Wells

Aussie Nick Kyrgios was also unbroken and serving dominantly at Indian Wells, but he was forced to pull out of his highly anticipated quarterfinal with Federer due to food poisoning.

Sure enough, Federer finished the set off in around 21 minutes, 6-1, with three aces.

Jack Sock broke through against a top-five ranked opponent after losing first seven matches vs such competition.

Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer will be squaring off for the 23rd time in their careers when they battle for the BNP Paribas Open title on Sunday.

This would be his 10th semi-final in Indian Wells, he had gone on to reach six finals, win four times, and rack up a record 55 match-wins in the desert.

This is where the favorable draw ends, and if Federer continues his aggressive play he will be able to take time away from Wawrinka's backhand. The Swiss earned another break for a 2-1 lead in the second set and never looked back, serving it out to take the set 6-2 and win the match in 64 minutes. Federer then won the next two points to snatch the tie-break 8-6. But the 18-time Grand Slam victor has backed the Scot, who has pulled out of the Miami Masters next week with injury and world number two Novak Djokovic, who is having a bad run of form, to come back to their best level and start winning tournaments again.

The Indian Wells Masters final has all the ingredients for a classic encounter, and it is not easy to pick a favourite.

Roger Federer's good times just keep rolling. "It was hard to break and return well off Jack's heavy serve". So, for me, just because Novak might not play Miami and Andy is not, and I'm in the finals here, it doesn't change anything in my scheduling. "So the kick serve for me today was crucial, first and second serve, and that's why I used it a lot".

"After a restless night of being sick I have nothing left and to play a great champion like Roger, I need to be at my best to have a chance". Turned out to be how I expected the first set to be, a struggle, balls flying all over the place, missing a few shots because it was tougher to see.

"I've given everybody their money's worth, a three-setter every match so far", the 24-year-old Sock said in an on-court interview.

But Federer's Australian Open title this year, his 18 Major, was preceded by a very taxing semi-final against Wawrinka, who repeatedly shifted the momentum of the match in his own favour throughout. "That's why, too much up and down", Wawrinka said. Sock got a sense of what it takes to be in the match against a great player, not merely on the court.
