Lawmakers: UK government must make plans for possibility of no Brexit deal

Brexit button: UK MPs prepare for key vote on bill

Initially, the Lords sought to introduce two amendments into the bill as they demanded from the government to guarantee the immutability of the status of EU citizens residing in the United Kingdom and to legislatively consolidate the prime minister's promise to present final agreements with the European Union to the parliament's court.

The approval of the Brexit bill was a victory for the prime minister, and her minister in charge of overseeing the European Union exit, David Davis, greeted peers outside the House of Lords chamber late Monday with a broad smile. The other amendment calling for Parliament to have a meaningful vote on any Brexit agreement was also dismissed by 331 to 286 votes.

Despite an attempt by the Liberal Democrats in the unelected upper chamber, the House of Lords, to re-introduce the conditions, the Lords also went on to approve the legislation unamended late on Monday.

Conservative Brexit minister Lord Bridges defended the decision to give full authority over the terms of leaving the European Union to the prime minister: "It is the culmination of a long democratic process, a process started by the people at the last election, endorsed by this house in an act of parliament, and then voted for by the people at the referendum itself", he said.

A government spokesperson said: "The British people voted to leave the European Union and we are determined to respect their decision".

Although May initially claimed that this was good enough for her to formally start the UK's divorce proceedings with the EU-officially speaking, to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty-the Supreme Court said otherwise.

However, it has emerged that in a 2012 speech on the European Union (EU), Mr Davis said: "If a democracy can not change its mind, it ceases to be a democracy".

Bill now passes back to the House of Lords.

Before the vote, SNP MP Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh asked whether Brexit Secretary David Davis had "given consideration to a deportation process then" given the government's "bad" track record on planning.

The report "Article 50 negotiations: Implications of "no deal" is the first select committee report to focus specifically on the implications of a "no deal" between Britain and the EU.

The Article 50 bill will receive Royal Assent and become law over the "coming days", Theresa May told MPs on Tuesday (14 March).

The pound took a beating yesterday, falling to an eight-week low against the dollar and a basket of currencies, hit by fears of a prolonged bout of political jousting over the terms of Britain's exit from the EU.

Sturgeon said that she had sought to work with London, but that her concerns about May's plan to leave Europe's single market, in order to cut immigration, had fallen on deaf ears.

Davis told the BBC he did not think that was "remotely likely", adding: "There will be tough points in this negotiation".
