Ill Kyrgios pulls out of quarterfinal clash with Federer

Nick Kyrgios has scored his second successive win over Novak Djokovic

Indian Wells - Nick Kyrgios ended Novak Djokovic's 19-match winning run at Indian Wells by beating the Serb 6-4 7-6 (3) to reach the BNP Paribas Open quarter-finals on Wednesday, while Roger Federer also advanced with a straight sets win over Rafa Nadal.

The 21-year-old Kyrgios' damaging serve and dynamic athleticism makes him a real threat to defeat Federer, a childhood tennis hero, for the second time in as many meetings.

The 15th-seeded Kyrgios clocked his fastest serve at 227 kph, and won 86 per cent of his first serve points.

"For me, it was all about coming out and trying to play the way I did in Australia", said Federer, who beat Nadal in a five-set thriller to lift the title in Melbourne in January.

Nadal, who is playing in his first tournament since losing to Roger Federer in the Australian Open final, leads the duel against Cilic 3-1, but they haven't played since the Basel quarter-finals in 2015 when Nadal won 4-6 6-3 6-3. A forehand volley sealed the set, and another forehand victor put Federer up a break at 2-1 in the second. No critic can really rely on the observation that the Australian Open courts were playing almost grass-fast: Federer's done it again, in less amenable conditions, in much more authoritative fashion. I am serving really well - that is creating chances for me to put pressure on their service games. "Even I was at 13 (in the world) a year ago, but I wasn't in a good place mentally at all. I did not play my best tennis but that's why it has a merit", Nadal said. "But I think that's changing little by little, which I'm very happy about".

Nick Kyrgios believes Rafael Nadal's ability to play every point as if his life depends on it is the biggest difference between himself and the Spaniard. At this stage we think it's food positioning and I'm praying it's nothing more.

Kyrgios' forehand and movement looking extremely sharp as he hit 25 winners on his way to victory.

Bidding to reach his first final of the season, world No. 17 Kyrgios faces unseeded American Sam Querrey, who earlier on Friday (AEDT) took out fourth- seeded Dominic Thiem 6-1 7-5.

The match point does not always sum up the match, but it did on Wednesday.
