Feds temporarily ban electronics on certain flights to US

Royal Jordanian warns about electronics prohibition on US flights

Royal Jordanian posted on Twitter on Monday that "following instructions from the concerned USA departments, we kindly inform our dearest passengers departing to and arriving from the United States that carrying any electronic or electrical device on board the flight cabins is strictly prohibited". "Cellular phones and medical devices needed during the flight are excluded from the ban".

At least two Middle Eastern airlines are telling passengers that laptops, tablet computers and other electronic devices are no longer allowed as carry-on items in flights headed to the United States, citing orders from United States authorities. It is also not clear why the electronic devices would be deemed a security risk in the cabin but not in the checked baggage hold.

Another US administration official says this covers devices larger than a cellphone.

A USA official told CNN the directive would be for a limited duration, applies to some Middle Eastern and African countries, and is meant to ensure extra security measures at specific airports. The tweet was deleted several hours later.

In a written statement, the Department of Homeland Security said, "We have no comment on potential security precautions, but will provide any update as appropriate". Of a dozen foreign airlines contacted Monday afternoon, Royal Jordanian was the only one to publicly detail such a prohibition on electronics.

Passengers flying from Detroit to Montreal Monday weren't allowed to carry certain electronic devices onto the plane because of "instructions" from the American government.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security didn't deny there is a directive, but declined to comment. The TSA referred all questions to the DHS. That ban has since been challenged by U.S. courts.
